In our last blog, our day care center in Newton talked about a few creative tips for encouraging your picky eater to eat healthier foods. To recap, we discussed naming the food something new, starting with small portions, and being patient. Luckily, our child care experts have a few more tricks up their sleeves! The following is a list of a few more tips for feeding healthy foods to your picky eater:
- Introduce new foods at snack-time- The last thing that you want is to ruin a family dinner by having to diligently encourage your child to try something new. Take some of the frustration out and make your family dinners more pleasant by taking introducing your child to new foods during snack time.
- Cut down on the drinks and snacks- Toddlers love to snack on things, and they seem to be constantly drinking something. If they fill up on snacks and drinks throughout the day, they are a lot less likely to eat a healthy meal. We are not saying to cut back on snacks all together, but try feeding them just a few snacks throughout the day. It is also a good idea to schedule out snacks for the same time every day.
- Invite a friend that doesn’t mind trying new foods- Kids are very impressionable, and if one of their peers is willing to try something new, they will be too! You can’t always have a friend come over for mealtimes, but it is a great way to get your child to at least try something for the first time.
