August is here, which means that there is still a full month of summer fun to enjoy.
Summer is a great time to go outside, get some energy out and enjoy the sunshine, but summer isn’t without risks. Dehydration, sunburns, bug bites and scrapes are just a few of the many dangers of summer, but luckily, there are many things you can do to keep your kids safe while they are playing outside. The following is a list from our day care center in Newtown or a few safety tips for a safe, fun summer:
#1. Come up with an emergency plan.
Every family needs to know what to do in case of an emergency. Know who to call, map out a route to the closest emergency room and carry all insurance cards and other necessary documents with you as much as you can. If you have a babysitter watching your kids, make sure that you share this information with them.
#2. Don’t leave home without the essentials.
When you are headed outside to play, make sure that you pack a bag with all of the essentials. Your bag should have sunscreen, bug spray, a first aid kit, snacks, water and all of your emergency information.
#3. Practice sun safety.
It only takes about fifteen minutes to get sunburned, so always put sunscreen on your kids before they go outside, and don’t forget to reapply it regularly. Keep in mind that, even on cloudy days, sunburns can occur. It is also important to make sure that your sunscreen can protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
