Does your child have a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes?
More and more kids are starting to develop type 2 diabetes, and many researchers have attributed this to the rise in childhood obesity. If your child’s body mass index (BMI) is above the 85th percentile, he or she has a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that, even if your child is at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, there are many things you can do to lower his or her risk:
#1. Feed your child a healthy diet.
Diet plays a huge role in your child’s weight, and that’s why it’s a good place to start when your child needs to lose excess weight. Replace refined carbohydrates and sugar with homemade, well-balanced meals that are full of veggies, fruits, healthy fats, whole grains and lean proteins.
#2. Encourage your child to exercise.
Regular exercise is an incredibly important part of type 2 diabetes prevention. Sign your child up for an organized sport or learn a new activity that the whole family can enjoy, like riding bikes or rollerskating.
#3. Set an example for your child!
Kids are constantly watching and learning from their parents, so make sure that you are setting a good example! If you make eating healthy and exercising priorities in your own life, your child is more likely to do so as well!
